Can You Sleep With a Nicotine Pouch In?

by Kyle Irvin on Sep 30, 2026

The Quick Answer

No. Take the nicotine pouch out before you go to sleep. It can move while you're asleep, creating a choking or swallowing risk, and nicotine close to bedtime may make it harder to fall asleep, cause you to wake up more during the night and reduce the time you spend in deep sleep. If you wake up with one still under your lip, remove it and make sure it's intact. A raw spot can happen after hours of contact, but that doesn't automatically mean you've been poisoned. If the pouch is missing or torn, figure out what happened. Use Poison Control if you think you swallowed it or if you feel unwell.

Falling asleep with a nicotine pouch in usually isn't the plan. You put one in while watching TV, get comfortable and wake up hours later with it still tucked under your lip.

That raises a few reasonable questions. Did it affect your sleep? Is the raw spot under your lip a problem? Does waking up with one in mean you need medical help?

What Happens When a Nicotine Pouch Stays In Overnight?

A Juice Head pouch is normally used for about 30 to 45 minutes. If you fall asleep with one in, it can remain under your lip for hours. Research is limited, but some studies have reported soreness, mouth irritation and changes to the tissue where the pouch rests.

That research can't tell us exactly what one accidental night will do. The likely reason for the raw feeling is simpler: the pouch stayed pressed against the same small area for hours, giving that tissue much longer contact than during normal use.

If the area still feels irritated, don't place another pouch on that spot. If the irritation persists, worsens or becomes a visible sore, speak with a dentist or healthcare professional.

What Happened When I Fell Asleep With One In

I've fallen asleep watching TV with a Juice Head pouch still under my lip. It wasn't something I planned. I simply nodded off and didn't think about the pouch again until the next morning.

When I woke up, it was still sitting in the same general spot and it was intact. The area under my lip felt a little raw, so I removed the pouch and went on with my morning. I didn't wake up feeling sick or thinking I needed to call Poison Control.

That's my experience with an intact pouch. It doesn't prove that everyone will have the same result, and it doesn't make sleeping with one in a good routine.

Can Nicotine Pouches Affect Your Sleep?

Nicotine can increase alertness and wakefulness. In broader nicotine research, people took longer to fall asleep, woke more during the night and spent less time in deep sleep. Some studies also found reduced REM sleep.

Falling asleep quickly doesn't prove that nicotine had no effect on the rest of the night.

There is an important limit to that answer. Most of the research involves cigarettes, nicotine replacement products or nicotine generally, not someone sleeping overnight with a nicotine pouch. The pouch could have affected your sleep, but we can't calculate the effect from one accidental night.

When it has happened to me, I wasn't running a sleep experiment or grading how rested I felt. I woke up, noticed the pouch and removed it. That's as far as my personal observation goes.

Could You Choke on or Swallow the Pouch?

Yes. A nicotine pouch is a small object that can move while you're asleep, so choking or accidentally swallowing it is possible. That doesn't mean it's likely to happen every time someone falls asleep with one in, but it is another reason to remove the pouch before bed.

If the pouch is missing or torn

  • Check nearby first. Look in your bedding, clothes and on the floor.
  • If you find it, throw it away. Don't put a used pouch back in your mouth.
  • If you reasonably believe you swallowed it, use webPOISONCONTROL or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. The FDA recommends making that call even if you feel fine. It doesn't automatically mean you need to visit an emergency room.
  • If it tore open, remove it and spit out any loose material. Use the same Poison Control guidance if you swallowed the contents or develop nausea, vomiting, dizziness, heavy sweating, confusion or unusual weakness.

Call 911 for trouble breathing, a seizure, collapse or someone who can't be awakened.

The Bottom Line

Falling asleep with a pouch in is easier to prevent once you know when it usually happens. If you regularly nod off on the couch, remove the pouch before you settle in instead of trusting yourself to remember later.
